Russian state media calls for genocide: “No one should be left alive in Ukraine”

Vladimir Putin's dictatorship has been unleashing a campaign of terror with deliberate attacks against the civilian population of Ukraine.

This Wednesday, one of the Kremlin's official propaganda outlets made the purpose of this terror campaign very clear. The Russian state news agency RIA Novosti has published an article with this title: "There is no other option: no one should be left alive in Ukraine" (for those who cannot access that website from home, an automated copy can be seen here on Wayback Machine and here's another one on Archive.ph). The article is bylined by Kirill Strelnikov, a regular columnist for the Russian state-owned outlet.

The RIA Novosti article is very angry with the praise from various Western sources for the Ukrainian army for its effectiveness in combating the Russian invaders, who have been enduring very high numbers of human and material losses, despite which Russia still has not even remotely achieved the objectives that Putin set for this invasion. A balance that is due, in large part, to the great motivation of the Ukrainian soldiers, who are defending their Homeland, their families and their homes against an invader.

Ignoring that important detail, Strelnikov claims that "many Ukrainians are ready to die because the Americans and Europeans have called them 'the best army in the world.' In reality, Ukrainian soldiers have only one fate: to be laboratory rats, mercilessly killed for experiments." In a mixture of cynicism and moral misery, the RIA Novosti columnist adds: "Paradoxically, Ukrainians are even happy with their lot." In the final paragraph, Strelnikov adds: "All the deadlines for enlightenment have already passed, and we will no longer call or persuade anyone. If people are consciously and happily ready to die for their masters, it is their choice."

So, if we strip the article of all the gimmicks, what RIA Novosti is basically saying is that Ukrainians must surrender if they don't want to fall victim to gemnocide. Of course, if they surrender, no one can guarantee that they will receive humane treatment: let us remember that the Russian invaders have perpetrated torture, rape, castrations, mutilations and decapitations against Ukrainian prisoners, both military and civilians, atrocities that in any war only serve to make the side that suffers them decide to prefer death in combat to surrender.

It must be remembered that between 1932 and 1933, the USSR, of which the Russian Federation considers itself the legal heir, perpetrated a genocide in Ukraine through deliberate famines that killed between 3.9 and 6 million victims. A genocide that Putin's dictatorship still refuses to recognize today. Now, apparently, Moscow is planning for history to repeat itself.

In addition to the aforementioned Ukrainian genocide (Ukraine was invaded by Soviet Russia as a result of the war that pitted the two countries against each other between 1917 and 1921), this is not the first time that an invading country has openly planned genocidal crimes against an invaded people: the Nazis had already done the same during World War II, committing horrendous mass crimes against the civilian population during their invasion of Poland in 1939, crimes that continued in the following years in other invaded countries and that ended up culminating in the Holocaust, the planned massacre of millions of people, mostly Jews.

It's chilling to think that the state that publishes such clear incitements to genocide has still not been expelled from the UN and even has veto power in its Security Council. Let's remember that the Soviet Union was expelled from the League of Nations on December 14, 1939, because of its invasion of Finland, an invasion previously agreed upon with Nazi Germany in the Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact in August of that year. What more is needed for Russia to be expelled from the UN and international organizations?

For the rest, will the antisemites who have been falsely accusing Israel of committing "genocide" in Gaza say anything about this? Will we see far-left demonstrations accusing Russia of committing genocide in Ukraine? Pedro Sánchez, who accused Israel of "genocide" but not Russia, does he have anything to say about this RIA Novosti article? Will it at least serve to make the Spanish government stop buying large quantities of Russian gas and oil?
