Pedro Sánchez has not yet resigned over the flood disaster, but the PP is already faltering

This Monday it became clear once again who is failing to rise to the occasion in a moment like the one Spain is experiencing. The national leadership of the People's Party has repeated its strategy of sacrificing its own members on the altar of socialist lynchings, a strategy that in the past has already led to the unfair treatment of innocent people like Rita Barberá and Francisco Camps.

This time, the PP leadership has pressured Carlos Mazón, president of the Valencian Community, to force him to resign amid a campaign by the left to place all political responsibility on him for the catastrophic floods of a year ago. Mazón announced his resignation this morning, an announcement with which the PP, far from appeasing the left, has only given it more ammunition.

Meanwhile, the main political figure responsible for exacerbating the effects of the floods has still not resigned. It should be remembered that it wasn't Carlos Mazón who refused to build stormwater tanks that would have mitigated the consequences of that disaster. Nor was he the one who delayed the deployment of the Army for four days, in a clear crime of omission of the duty to provide assistance, while the residents of the affected areas were without electricity or running water, completely abandoned by the State.

It was someone else who fled from the anger of the residents of Paiporta on November 3, 2024, leaving the King and Mazón to face them. Nor was it the Valencian president who deceived those affected by the floods by saying that he had already requested aid from the European Solidarity Fund on November 5, only to ultimately request it two and a half months later and one day before the deadline.

All of this was done by Pedro Sánchez's government. He is ultimately responsible for exacerbating the consequences of the floods, a disaster for which he refused to take command of the situation despite it affecting several regions and the fact that the National Security Law empowered him to do so. Instead of reacting quickly to the disaster, he prioritized the PSOE's takeover of RTVE, in a policy of the socialists' progressive occupation of all institutions. To this day, he continues to do nothing to prevent the disaster from happening again, postponing any work to mitigate flooding until 2027.

Sánchez continues to refuse to resign for his responsibility in this disaster, maintaining his habit of not taking responsibility for the consequences of his disastrous policies, as he also did with the massive blackout of April 28, 2025. Instead, Sánchez focuses his efforts on creating false narratives in which he is never to blame for anything, as if he were a mere spectator instead of being the president of the government of Spain.

If Mazón has resigned today, it is due to the pressure of a blatant campaign by the left to absolve the government of all responsibility for the catastrophe, a campaign similar to the one we already experienced with the aforementioned blackout, with the terrible effects of the government's delayed response to the 2020 pandemic, or with the railway chaos that Spain is suffering under the leadership of the socialist Óscar Puente, Minister of Transport. The People's Party has faltered once again and sacrificed Mazón, offering him to the left as a scapegoat, in the mistaken belief that this will serve to create a firewall between this leftist campaign and the PP.

On the contrary, all Feijóo has managed to do is fuel the left's campaign, emboldened by the PP's weakness — a party that constantly proves itself unfit at a time when Spain needs a strong opposition against an unscrupulous government. The PP's national leadership has demonstrated today its lack of such strength and its willingness to sacrifice any member of its party whose head is demanded by a cynical left that shirks all responsibility for its mistakes, incompetence, and negligence. Like hyenas, the left senses weakness, and today the PP has only served to encourage it to continue its hunt against the party. This blunder leaves Feijóo particularly damaged by his pusillanimous attitude toward the worst government Spain has had to endure in a long time.
