One of the founders of the communist party Podemos proposes an alliance between Europe and Russia

The Spanish far left continues to openly display its alignment with the geostrategic interests of Putin's dictatorship.

Last Sunday, Juan Carlos Monedero, one of the founders of the communist party Podemos, posted a message on Twitter stating: "And I ask you, why don't we ally ourselves with Russia, which is the natural continuation of the European continent, and save ourselves a trillion euros in weaponry?" The well-known communist activist, currently sidelined from Podemos after a sexual harassment complaint that was dismissed by the Prosecutor's Office in May, includes in his message a screenshot of a news article from El País with this title: "Europe enters a state of alert in the face of Trump's strategic onslaught."

Monedero's position is no surprise. In 2014, Podemos criticized the sanctions against Russia for the illegal annexation of Crimea. In November of that year, the pro-government Russian media outlet Pravda.ru labeled Podemos a "pro-Russian party", highlighting its hostility towards NATO and the United States and its attacks on the Ukrainian government. In the previous European legislature, Podemos was one of the Spanish parties that most often aligned itself with the interests of the Kremlin, only surpassed by Izquierda Unida, the former electoral brand of the Communist Party of Spain (PCE).

The message from that Podemos founder coincides with a clear rapprochement of that far-left party with the communist dictatorship in Beijing, the biggest ally of Putin's dictatorship. In recent years, Podemos has expressed its affinity with other dictatorships allied with Russia, such as Venezuela and Cuba. In February of this year, Irene Montero traveled to Havana, where she met with Miguel Díaz-Canel, the current communist dictator of an anti-democratic regime that has been governing Cuba without free elections, with a one-party system and violating the most basic human rights since 1959.

While associating with communist dictatorships, Podemos openly attacks democratic countries and the organizations dedicated to their defense. A few months ago, Irene Montero called for Spain's withdrawal from NATO and directed harsh criticism against two democratic countries—criticism she has never directed against Putin's dictatorship—stating that "the US and Israel are currently the two greatest dangers to humanity." Today, communists continue to defend the geopolitical positions they held during the Cold War, which is no surprise: they have always shown more affinity for communist dictatorships than for liberal democracies.
