The extreme left never disappoints: it is always supporting and protecting brutal dictatorships and never deviates from that discourse.
After two weeks of massive protests in Iran, the Islamist dictatorship has resorted to extreme violence to repress them, murdering hundreds of people. Many are asking on social media where the feminist left is, suspiciously silent in the face of protests demanding the rights of Iranian women, treated as inferior beings by the Islamist regime. One of the most egregious silences is that of the communist MEP Irene Montero, a prominent figure in the far-left party Podemos.
Irene Montero's collaborations with a media outlet of the Iranian dictatorship
That silence is no surprise. Montero is the partner of Pablo Iglesias Turrión, founder of Podemos, who in 2013 admitted that he was allowing himself to be used by the Iranian dictatorship to destabilize Spain: "The Iranians are interested in the spread of a left-wing discourse in Latin America and Spain because it affects their adversaries," he stated at a public event to justify his program "La Tuerka" on the HispanTV channel, owned by the Iranian dictatorship, which uses it as a propaganda channel aimed at Spanish-speaking countries.
It should be remembered that Montero participated in "La Tuerka" regularly. Furthermore, in January 2019 Iglesias and Montero presented a joint program on that channel, dedicated to film. A month later, Montero justified her collaborations with that Iranian propaganda channel by stating that they "contribute to democracy." However, the possibility of helping Iran become a democracy seems to matter very little to the communist leader, as she demonstrated again today at a Podemos public event in Zaragoza.
Montero criticizes the United States and Israel but not the Iranian dictatorship
During her speech at that event, Montero mentioned Iran after criticizing the capture of dictator Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela. That part of her speech can be seen in the video of the event on Podemos' YouTube channel, starting at 38:13. Montero added: "Now they're going after Iran, and they tell us, 'Iran is an authoritarian regime.' Of course, there are millions of women in Iran who have spent years building their own processes, trying to liberate themselves. Most of the time, with the silence of all those lackeys of the United States."
In her remarks about that Asian country, Montero made not a single reference to the Islamist dictatorship or its brutal repression of the protests in recent days. The videos we are seeing these days with the multitude of body bags containing the protesters killed by the Islamist regime did not merit the attention of the communist MEP. Instead, Montero focused her criticism on the United States and Israel, labeling those democratic countries as "terrorist" but not the dictatorship of Ali Khamenei, which massacres its own people to drown in blood any protest in favor of freedom and democracy.
“He doesn't give a damn about democracy and human rights”
After mentioning the US sanctions against that anti-democratic regime, the Podemos leader said about Iran: "We must denounce this hypocrisy." The communist MEP then went on to criticize Donald Trump, claiming that he said "he doesn't give a shit about democracy and human rights," words invented by Montero but which do reflect her and her far-left party's attitude toward Iran and other dictatorships.
Looking after China's oil interests in Iran?
With her usual histrionic tone, Montero continued to criticize other politicians, but avoided any criticism of Iranian dictator Ali Khamenei, the main person responsible for the massacre of protesters by that Islamist regime. Montero added: "Perhaps what they're after in Iran is that it's the main, or one of the main, exporters of oil to China in the world." The mention of that communist dictatorship is not accidental. In September 2025, Montero traveled to China to meet with the ruling party of that dictatorship. She was accompanied by the founder of Podemos, Pablo Iglesias, and by the party's current general secretary, Ione Belarra.
Turning Montero's words around, one has to ask: Is China one of the reasons why the communist leader avoids all criticism of Khamenei and his dictatorship? Does Montero place more importance on the oil trade between these two dictatorships than on the human rights of those living under them? The answer is obvious: Today, Montero defended China's oil interests in Iran, not the rights of Iranian citizens. And then we have to put up with the far-left telling us that those of us who demand freedom and democracy for Iran are only interested in oil.
