Attacks against Jews are becoming increasingly common in Spain, with a government that encourages antisemitism.
This morning, the Federation of Jewish Communities of Spain (FCJE) published a statement denouncing "a serious episode of antisemitic harassment reported by a group of French Jewish citizens in Barcelona, on the night of Friday, July 3, 2026".
The victims stated that""the events began upon leaving a synagogue after Shabbat prayers and dinner. Two members of the group, identifiable by their kippahs—one of them in Hasidic attire— were subjected to hostile stares, insults, and harassment for about an hour and a half on their way to their hotel."
According to the FCJE, the complainants reported that "a woman dressed in shorts, a sports bra, a Palestinian scarf, and whose body was covered in tattoos (according to the group's description), began chasing them, shouting antisemitic slogans and repeatedly spitting at them. Gradually, dozens of people—many on bicycles, scooters, or motorcycles—joined the harassment, chanting phrases such as 'Jews are not welcome in Barcelona,' 'baby killers,' and 'Israeli genocide,' preventing them from walking normally. According to their testimony, they feared physical assault for more than half an hour, until they reached the Hotel Arts, where security personnel prevented their pursuers from entering."
The FCJE has pointed out the precedents for this new antisemitic attack, such as "the desecration of the Jewish cemetery in Montjuïc, graffiti and acts of vandalism, intimidating demonstrations, and threats against members of the community." As I already pointed out here in May, neither the socialist government of Pedro Sánchez nor the socialist regional government of Salvador Illa has said anything about this witch hunt against the Jews of Catalonia. All this after such regrettable events as the insults uttered last year by the socialist minister Óscar Puente against a group of French Jews who were expelled from a plane in what the Movement Against Intolerance denounced as an act of antisemitic discrimination, which also received criticism from the Federation of Jewish Communities of Spain and the European Jewish Congress.
Spain is suffering the effects of a growing antisemitism from the far left, openly encouraged and supported by a government with communist ministers, a unique case in Europe. A government that has done things like authorize a march by an antisemitic terrorist group in Madrid, a criminal organization that openly supported Hamas's attack against Israel on October 7, 2013, which resulted in the largest antisemitic massacre since the Holocaust.
