Energy dependence: what strange interests does the Sánchez government serve?

A few days ago, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, acknowledged that reducing Europe's nuclear energy sector was a "strategic mistake". We can see an example of this great error in the policy of the government of Pedro Sánchez, determined to close the last Spanish nuclear power plants, which leads to an absurd situation: Spain is forced to import energy from France, thanks to the low prices of its nuclear energy.

This week we learned that the price of electricity in Spain has risen by 146% in 15 years, amid a transition to more expensive renewable energies and which has generated a lack of stability in the system that already led to the Spain's first national blackout in April 2025, a very serious event about whose causes the Sánchez government has not yet given clear explanations.

Furthermore, amidst a situation of energy dependence, Spain continues to import Russian gas, financing Putin's war of aggression against Ukraine. The Enagás statistical bulletin of February 2026 indicated that Russia is the third largest gas exporter to Spain, accounting for 14.6% of the total last month and 11.4% over the past year. Domestic gas fields (0.1%) and domestic biomethane (0.1%) represent a negligible percentage of Spain's gas consumption.

Let us remember that in 2021 the PSOE (Sánchez's party) and its partners in Podem os—a far-left party described as "pro-Russian" by the pro-government Russian newspaper Pravda in November 2014— passed a law that prohibits new hydrocarbon exploitation in Spain and even vetoes permits to explore and investigate potential deposits. This means that in Spain, oil and natural gas cannot be extracted, nor can unexploited deposits be explored. This situation is especially absurd considering that Spain has deposits that could supply us with natural gas for 40 years.

Supposedly, this law was passed in the name of a radical environmentalism that the left prioritizes over the interests of Spain and the well-being of Spaniards. But is there more to it? Four years ago, I already pointed out here that this law seemed designed to favor Russia, which a few months earlier had begun its large-scale invasion of Ukraine. Just review the facts: In 2024, Spanish gas imports from Russia even surpassed those from the United States. This strange situation doesn't only affect gas: In 2023, Spain began importing Russian oil through Morocco. The government was perfectly aware of the origin of that oil but said nothing.

Sánchez's favor to Beijing regarding renewable energy

Alongside this process, the Sánchez government has become one of the main European partners of the Chinese communist dictatorship, which is an ally of Russia. In addition to geopolitical reasons, Beijing has a clear economic interest in promoting the left's environmental policies that drive up electricity prices in Spain. China controls 80% of the global solar panel market. With the support of the Sánchez government, Chinese companies are massively buying renewable energy and battery assets in Spain, profiting from our country's energy dependence. It would be bad news for Beijing if Spain were to return to nuclear energy.

Favors to Russia and China that should be investigated by the Justice system

So, when Sánchez uses environmental rhetoric to justify an energy policy that makes us poorer and more dependent, who does his government benefit? Certainly not the Spanish people. We are paying more for electricity than ever before. We have a more unstable electrical grid, and we have already endured a national blackout that resulted in several deaths. It is Russia and China that are profiting from Sánchez, after using two allied parties (the PSOE and Podemos) to further their interests in Spain —a policy that should be investigated by the Spanish Justice for the obvious damage it is causing to our country.

The logical question now is: what compensation do those who are betraying Spain's interests expect to gain? In Spain, we are learning of more and more cases of political corruption linked to the Sánchez government. Some of them are related to the massive purchase of masks from China at exorbitant prices during the pandemic. How long will it be before we learn of other similar cases related to the possible purchase of influence to favor the interests of other countries in the energy sector?
