Claudia Sheinbaum has unleashed an offensive against freedoms in that country

The extreme left is turning Mexico into a dictatorship like Venezuela

For many years, the extreme left has been applying a series of recipes that always lead to a very predictable end.

The 50 countries that most persecute Christians in 2025 and the role of communism and islamism
Shame: López Obrador invited soldiers of Russia and other dictatorships to a parade in Mexico

In the last century, we saw it in the case of Cuba, a country subjected to a communist dictatorship since 1959, after an armed uprising led by demagogues who supposedly intended to liberate the country. At the beginning of this century, Venezuela fell into that black hole of totalitarianism, at the hands of two great socialist charlatans: Hugo Chávez and Nicolás Maduro. Since 2007, Nicaragua has been following the same path, with a communist dictatorship headed by Daniel Ortega and his wife, Rosario Murillo, an anti-democratic regime that has launched a fierce persecution against the Catholic Church.

Mexico is embarking on the same anti-democratic path, a path it began to tread under President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, founder of the so-called National Regeneration Movement (Morena), a populist left-wing party under which in 2021 Mexico left the club of imperfect democracies to enter the club of hybrid regimes, the prelude to authoritarian regimes. Lest anyone has forgotten two decades later, it is the same path that Venezuela began to tread in 2006 and Today, those two countries are authoritarian regimes.

The Mexican far-left has followed the same formulas as in other parts of the Americas, beginning with Hispanophobia, one of the favorite hate speeches of the most radical and demagogic left, not only in the Americas but also in Spain, where it is openly promoted by communists and the separatist far-left. Across the Atlantic, the far-left bases its discourse on inventing a genocide that never existed (in fact, what Spain did was put an end to the genocide that the Aztecs were perpetrating against other pre-Columbian peoples).

It's exactly the same lie that the far left and separatists promote in Spain, but in Mexico it has a peculiarity: Mexicans of Spanish descent are falsely accusing their own ancestors of this genocide —the very ancestors who traveled to the New World and settled there. This lie explains the recent controversies surrounding Hernán Cortés in Mexico, a debate as absurd as if Spaniards were to start demonizing their Roman ancestors.

In the end, this absurd debate, promoted by those in political power, has begun to reveal its true intentions. Yesterday, the president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, had to cancel her visit to Mexico after the country's president, the far-leftist Claudia Sheinbaum, threatened to prohibit the event in which the Spanish politician was scheduled to participate. This threat is typical of someone whose concept of democracy seems to be the same as that of Fidel Castro, Hugo Chávez, Nicolás Maduro, and Daniel Ortega.

Furthermore, the extreme left has succeeded in getting Mexico onto the list of 50 countries that most persecute Christians in the world, with the 31st position in the latest ranking published by the NGO Open Doors in January. The Sheinbaum government has been staging attacks on judicial independence, systematic attacks on press freedom, attempts to control what is published on social media and attempts to subject citizens to surveillance, all amidst an approach to the dictatorship of Vladimir Putin already initiated by López Obrador a few years ago. Anti-democrats attract each other like manure attracts flies.

Alongside this anti-democratic drift, the far-left's policy of tolerance toward organized crime in Mexico has led the country to record-high homicide rates. While Sheinbaum focuses on promoting hatred of Spain and speaking ill of Hernán Cortés, a Spanish explorer who died in 1547, the Mexican people are being bled dry by a perverse alliance between drug trafficking and the extreme left —the same alliance that previously drained a once prosperous country like Venezuela, turning it into a vast prison.

If Mexico wants to find the causes of its misfortune, it doesn't need to go back hundreds of years in the past (when the Viceroyalty of New Spain was the richest and most prosperous territory of the Spanish Empire, in case anyone has forgotten): what it should do is demand answers from charlatans like López Obrador and Sheinbaum, who are leading that sister country down the path of ruin and tyranny.
