A night of maximum tension in Poland due to the fall of Iranian Shahed attack drones launched by Russia on Polish territory.
Tonight, the Polish Armed Forces Operational Command announced at 0:37 CET:
"Attention, on the night of September 9-10, 2025, the Russian Federation will carry out new massive airstrikes against targets located in Ukraine. To ensure the security of Polish airspace, the Operational Commander of the Polish Armed Forces has activated all necessary procedures. Polish and allied aircraft operate in our airspace, and ground-based air defense and radar reconnaissance systems have reached the maximum alert level. These actions are of a preventive nature and are aimed at securing airspace and protecting citizens, especially in areas adjacent to the threatened area."
“Our airspace was repeatedly violated by drone-type objects”
This type of statement is common every time Russia launches a massive airstrike against Ukraine, prompting Polish air defenses to be activated in case any Russian missiles land on its territory. However, tonight, at 3:48 a.m. CET, the Polish Armed Forces Operational Command issued a new, more serious statement than the previous one:
"Attention, during today's attack by the Russian Federation, which is carrying out attacks against objects located on the territory of Ukraine, our airspace was repeatedly violated by drone-type objects.
An operation is underway to identify and neutralize the targets. At the request of the Operational Commander of the Armed Forces, weapons have been deployed and operations are underway to locate the downed targets.
We emphasize that the military operation continues and we urge everyone to stay home. The most vulnerable areas are the Podlaskie, Mazovian, and Lublin Voivodeships.
The Armed Forces Operational Command is monitoring the current situation, and its subordinate forces and resources remain fully prepared for an immediate response."
Four Polish airports have been closed due to this attack
Following the arrival of Russian attack drones on Polish territory, the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that four Polish airports — two in Warsaw, Rzeszów, and Lublin — were closed overnight Tuesday into Wednesday due to "unplanned military activity related to ensuring national security."
A Republican US congressman: “This is an act of war”
In a message posted at 2:21 a.m. CET, US Republican Congressman Joe Wilson said:
"Russia is attacking NATO ally Poland with Iranian shahed drones less than a week after President Trump hosted President Nawrocki at the White House. This is an act of war, and we are grateful to NATO allies for their swift response to war criminal Putin’s continued unprovoked aggression against free and productive nations. I urge President Trump to respond with mandatory sanctions that will bankrupt the Russian war machine and arm Ukraine with weapons capable of striking Russia. Putin is no longer content just losing in Ukraine while bombing mothers and babies, he is now directly testing our resolve in NATO territory. Putin stated that “Russia knows no borders.” Free and prosperous nations will teach Russia about borders."
“Aircraft have deployed weapons against hostile targets”
Updated 4:57 AM: At 4:19 AM CET, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced:
"An operation involving multiple violations of Polish airspace is underway. The military has used weapons against the targets. I am in constant contact with the President and the Minister of Defense. I received a direct report from the operation commander."
Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, Minister of National Defense, communicated in a message at 4:40 a. m. CET:
"An operation is underway to neutralize the objects that violated the Polish border. The President and Prime Minister have been notified. All services are operational. Please respect the communications of the Polish Army and Police. Aircraft have deployed weapons against hostile targets. We are in constant contact with NATO Command. The Territorial Defense Forces (TDF) have been activated to conduct a ground search for downed drones. Please remain calm and transmit only communications from the military and government services. If you find fragments of objects, do not approach them and inform the police."
“An unprecedented violation of Polish airspace by drones occurred”
