The coalition government of socialists and communists led by Pedro Sánchez is heading down an increasingly dangerous slope.
Political corruption and the crime of revealing secrets
Currently, the government and Sánchez's party, the PSOE, are besieged by corruption scandals affecting people very close to the president of the government. Recently, Attorney General Álvaro García Ortiz, appointed by Sánchez, was convicted of revealing secrets as part of an operation against a political rival of the Socialists.
The socialist scandals of sexual harassment of women
To that must be added the recent scandal of sexual harassment allegations against the socialist Francisco Salazar, a high-ranking official in the president of the government office with whom the PSOE agreed to his quiet departure five months ago, guaranteeing him stable income through internal commissions for studies Demoscopic polls, as revealed today by El Debate. While this case was still making headlines, another scandal erupted yesterday: complaints from women about sexual harassment against the socialist José Tomé Roca, president of the Lugo Provincial Council, mayor of Monforte de Lemos and top leader of the PSOE in the province of Lugo.
Allegations of corruption in the Socialist International
These scandals are no longer limited to Spain. Yesterday, VozPópuli revealed allegations of corruption within the Socialist International, which has been presided over by Sánchez for the past three years. It's as if everything was the same under the Spanish socialist leader. This succession of scandals is already having the effect of a collapse for the PSOE in the polls and an increase in internal criticism within the party, which until now has been dominated by an absolute silence imposed by a leadership with increasingly authoritarian attitudes. In fact, today VozPópuli points out that Sánchez has launched a witch hunt against critics within his party.
Sánchez defends a criminal and assures that he will govern until 2031
Sánchez's reaction to all these scandals is utterly insane. Yesterday, at an event honoring the founder of the PSOE, Pablo Iglesias, a fanatic who incited the assassination of a political rival in 1910 (an act for which his party has never even offered the slightest apology), Sánchez He openly defended García Ortiz, stating that "he has defended the truth." In other words, Spain has a president of the government who publicly defends a convicted criminal. This government is making Spain resemble a banana republic in terms of respect for judicial independence and the decisions of the courts.
Indifferent to all the scandals and the debacle of his party in the polls (in all except those published by the CIS, controlled by the government and which always gives the victory to the PSOE, with increasingly evident shamelessness), yesterday Sánchez assured that he will complete the legislature, that he will win the elections in 2027 and that he will govern until 2031. He said it with the same certainty with which he had previously affirmed that García Ortiz was "innocent." The problem is that in this case, Sánchez is capable of anything to make his prediction come true. We must not forget that in 2014 he manipulated the primary elections that led him to the top of his party.
An authoritarian attitude that bodes ill for Spain
The Spanish Socialist leader is displaying an attitude typical of someone who is ignorant of the most basic notions of democracy, a system of government that implies that political power must be accountable to the people for its actions and assume responsibility for scandals such as those mentioned. Sánchez has been exhibiting narcissism and a clear eagerness to use all the levers of power to satisfy his personal desires, placing them above the interests of Spain and the well-being of the Spanish people. His reaction to the scandals surrounding his government and his party is that of an authoritarian leader and foreshadows the worst possible scenario for Spain in the near future: can a clean electoral process be expected from a president of government who acts in this way?
