Fanaticism is a serious scourge in the political sphere, and sometimes it reaches extremes that demonstrate a truly astonishing inhumanity.
He has been denouncing the government's failures to protect these patients for years
Jordi Sabaté is a Spanish citizen suffering from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), an incurable nervous system disease that causes progressive paralysis. Because of this, Jordi can only communicate using a computer that he operates with his eyes. This patient has spent years denouncing Pedro Sánchez's constant failure to deliver on promises made to ALS patients, who continue to not receive the aid promised by the government.
It should be noted that Jordi is famous in Spain because, thanks to his tenacious activism, he secured the unanimous passage of the ALS Law in Congress, which provides support to patients with this disease so they can live with dignity. As I pointed out here five years ago, families of ALS patients face an average cost of €34,594 per year, and only 6% can afford it. Only 5.6% of patients have a hired caregiver. This pushes many to opt for euthanasia, which was legalized in Spain by the left at the initiative of the Sánchez government.
The effects of the left's legalization of euthanasia
In 2020, I already warned here that the legalization of euthanasia diverts resources from palliative care, as was demonstrated years ago in the case of the Netherlands. Governments that promote getting rid of the sick instead of helping them live with dignity tend not to show interest in such care, and Pedro Sánchez's government has been no exception. In the last legislature, the PSOE and Podemos, promoters of the euthanasia law, blocked the processing of the ALS law 49 times after its approval, until finally the law lapsed after the calling of the 2023 general elections, so it was necessary to process it again in October 2024.
The government spends more money on propaganda than is needed to help those patients
Now the government is hiding behind the impossibility of approving its budget to avoid implementing aid for ALS patients, a pretext with no credibility whatsoever considering that the government has had no qualms about approving propaganda expenditures far exceeding the amount allocated for aid to these patients. This situation, caused by the government itself through its refusal to call elections, has led some ALS patients to resort to the courts: Today, a Barcelona court issued a ruling in favor of one of them, forcing the government to provide the aid it refuses to give him so he can live with dignity.
“Many "left-wing" people are trying to sabotage my repeated searches for healthcare professionals to stay alive”
Jordi Sabaté's activism on behalf of ALS patients is making him the target of increasingly underhanded reprisals by left-wing activists who, apparently, cannot tolerate any kind of criticism of the government. Jordi posted a message on Twitter this Saturday stating:
"Throughout my activism for the right to life of people with ALS, I have denounced people from both the 'right' and the 'left' on social media. But now I don't know why 99% of the hate I receive comes from 'left' people. Boycotting my repeated search for healthcare professionals to stay alive, given the lack of public support for nursing care, is the most diabolical thing I've experienced in a long time."
In another tweet, Jordi denounced: "Many "left-wing" people are trying to sabotage my repeated searches for healthcare professionals to stay alive." Jordi pointed out that he has five people on his payroll and added: "I pay nursing assistants much more than the minimum wage and more than the public healthcare system does, just for attending to one patient." Jordi added: "They are attacking me, instead of attacking the "left-wing" government that is committing genocide against people with ALS."
This is the level of fanaticism some have reached in Spain: they boycott healthcare for a patient for criticizing the failures of a coalition government of socialists and communists. A segment of the Spanish left seems to share the same concept of democratic values as the ayatollahs of Iran.
