In 2024, the Los Llanos Air Base, in Albacete, will celebrate 50 years in operation as one of the main bases of the Spanish Air Force.
Albacete is an important center of the Air Force, as there are three important institutions there. On the one hand, there is the 14th Wing, one of the four fighter wings of the Air Combat Command (MACOM). That unit was created in 1974 and was equipped with Mirage F1 fighters. Since 2012 its weapons system is the Eurofighter Typhoon, a model that the 11th Wing of Morón (Seville) also operates.
On the other hand, next to the Los Llanos Air Base is the Albacete Air Maestranza (MAESAL), the most important of the three maintenance and repair centers of the Spanish Air Force (the other two Maestranzas are in Madrid and Seville). This unit is in charge of the inspection and repair work of the EF-18 Hornet and Eurofighter fighters, the CL-215T and CL-415 seaplanes of the 43rd Group, the C-101 Aviojet trainers and F-5M and the C-212, CN-235, C-295 and Falcon 900 transport aircraft, and the Super Puma and S-76 helicopters, among other aircraft.
Finally, at the Los Llanos Air Base it is developed the Tactical Leadership Program (TLP, Tactical Leadership Program), which is the equivalent of the famous Top Gun in NATO. Created in 1978, this program has been taught at the Albacete base since 2009. Two years ago I gave you more details about this program here.
This week, the popular Spanish YouTuber Ángel Gaitán has paid a visit to the Los Llanos Air Base and the Albacete Air Stationon the occasion of that 50th anniversary. The video shows us inside the facilities of these two important military centers (the video is in Spanish, you can activate the automatic English subtitles in the bottom bar of the player):
