The Spanish Navy is the second oldest in the world (the first is the Portuguese Navy) and is also part of a very select club.
This club is made up of navies with the capacity to project their force far from the coasts of their country, the so-called "blue water navies" (as opposed to brown water navies, which only sail along their coastline, and green water navies, which only project their force in seas close to their coasts). In the case of Spain, this must be added to the fact that it has the oldest Marine Corps in the world.
Spain can be proud of its Navy. To make known some of its human and material resources, the Spanish Navy has published today a video entitled "Somos la Armada" (We are the Navy), which reviews what the Spanish naval force is in less than two minutes. Stay very attentive to the screen so that you don't miss any details:
Let's look at some interesting details that appear in this video.
A missile is launched from the Mk 13 missile launcher of a Santa Maria-class frigate. In this case, it is a RIM-66 Standard MR surface-to-air missile.
The Lightweight Integral Robotic Exploration Vehicle (Veril) 01, a USV (unmanned surface vehicle), specifically a Marine Robotis Otter, designed for efficient and accurate data acquisition, environmental monitoring and surveillance in protected, coastal and shallow areas using bathymetric mapping. It is operated by the Hydrographic Institute of the Navy and its acquisition was announced in April 2023.
The torpedo launching test of the submarine "Isaac Peral" S-81 that was carried out in January of this year. What we see in orange in front of the submarine is a model of a torpedo painted in orange.
A rare sight: the only AAV-7R amphibious recovery vehicle of the Tercio de Armada. The Spanish Marine Corps expeditionary force has another 18 AAV-7 amphibious vehicles of US origin: 16 AAV-7P personnel transports and 2 AAV-7C command vehicles. The Spanish Navy is interested in the Amphibious Combat Vehicle (ACV) from Iveco and BAE Systems to replace the aging AAV-7s.
One of the four Piranha IIIC sapper vehicles of the Amphibious Mobility Group (GRUMA) of the Tercio de Armada. These vehicles are equipped with minesweeping rakes on their front.
An EAV-8B+ Harrier II Plus fighter from the 9th Aircraft Flotilla Squadron during an in-flight refueling with an A400M Atlas tanker aircraft from the 31st Wing of the Spanish Air Force. The line that appears on the canopy is a detonating cord to blow it up in case the pilot has to eject.
An Alpha 900 UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) on the flight deck of the maritime action vessel "Furor" during NATO's Dynamic Messenger exercise in September 2023.
A Marine Corps Humvee, armed with a Browning M-2 machine gun. This type of vehicle is being replaced by ST-5 VAMTACs manufactured by the Spanish company UROVESA. The vehicle in the image has a night vision scope mounted on its machine gun.
A MOWAG Piranha IIIC scout and reconnaissance vehicle. These vehicles are fitted with a Lance turret armed with a Rheinmetall Mk 30-2/ABM 30 mm cannon.
Finally, these six EF-18Ms from the Spanish Air Force have snuck into this video from the Navy. They appear flying over the aircraft carrier "Juan Carlos I" L-61, the flagship of the Spanish Navy.
