Como vemos a menudo en este blog, hay muchos cementerios en distintos países que se encuentran en un triste estado de abandono.

Highgate: the exotic and gloomy cemetery where 170,000 residents of London rest
Anyox: an abandoned military cemetery in a remote ghost town of Canada

Cemeteries are places to bury, remember, and honor the deceased, but like other human constructions, these places can also be abandoned. This is the case with the beautiful columbariums in the monumental part of the Tavernelle Cemetery in Ancona, a city on Italy's Adriatic coast.

I haven't found much information about this cemetery. It was founded in the 19th century and is still in use today, but the columbariums are abandoned and in a sad state due to lack of maintenance and vandalism. The gravestones are broken and vegetation has covered some of the oldest niches. Despite this, there is still light, as can be seen in some of the gravestones. A few days ago, Urbex Dementia posted a video visiting those columbariums (the video is in Italian, you can activate the automatic subtitles in English in the bottom bar of the player):

Below you can see some screenshots from this video. Here we see the exterior of the columbariums. The interior is what appears in the image at the top of this article. It's an ideal place for old-school romantics.

This is the interior hallway of the columbaria. It looks like something out of a horror movie...

A light is on in one of the tombs. From what I've read in the Italian newspaper Il Resto del Carlino, there are families who have not been able to access these columbariums to see their loved ones for 20 years, but they continue to pay for the electricity in their niches... There have been requests to move the dead buried there, but the firefighters claim that the place is dangerous, even for them, due to its state of neglect.

Just as they were finishing the video, the two explorers featured found a second abandoned columbarium, this one even with vegetation covering part of the niches. It's a shame to have a cemetery in these conditions.
