Brutal Russian massacre in Ukraine's capital: Why is almost no one calling this 'genocide'?

In recent hours, Vladimir Putin's dictatorship has launched one of the worst attacks against the Ukrainian capital since the start of the invasion.

Once again, and as Russia has been doing systematically, the attack has targeted residential areas of the city, becoming one of the bloodiest attacks of this war. According to Timur Tkachenko, Head of the Military Administration of the City of Kyiv, this morning, 31 people have been killed in this attack. In addition, 159 people have been injured, including 12 children. The death toll is likely to rise as rescue efforts continue in the rubble of buildings attacked by the Russian invaders.

According to figures published on May 31 by the United Nations Human Rights Office (UNHRC), the Russian invasion has already killed more than 13,000 people, including more than 700 children. The number of injured has risen to more than 32,000, including more than 2,000 children. If the number of victims of the Russian attacks is not higher, it is due to the effectiveness of Ukraine's air defenses, which are managing to shoot down a large number of missiles and attack drones launched by the Russians against Ukrainian cities. Obviously, these are not figures fabricated by Hamas terrorists: perhaps that is why we don't see them in almost any media?

For the past 3 years, Russia's willingness to kill as many Ukrainian civilians as possible has been amply demonstrated by its constant attacks on targets that have no military value: residential buildings, hospitals, churches, schools, universities, museums... To this we must add the cold-blooded mass murders perpetrated by the invaders against unarmed civilians, as we saw in the Bucha massacres and Izyum, war crimes that are a terrifying reminder of the massacres perpetrated by Nazi Germany in occupied countries during World War II.

However, and while the official Russian media openly call for genocide in Ukraine (saying it clearly, as if mocking the reluctance of many to utter that word during this war), very few governments, international organizations, politicians and media outlets accuse Russia of "genocide", with honorable exceptions such as that of the Parliament of Poland. Some even apply radically different standards to one war or the other. For example, in July, Spanish socialist Pedro Sánchez accused Israel of "genocide" but not Russia or Hamas. His far-left partners share the same position, demonizing Israel (a country attacked by Hamas) but remaining complicitly silent about Russia (the aggressor country).

One wonders why some people display such a blatant double standard. Don't they accuse Russia of "genocide" because Putin is neither Jewish nor a citizen of Israel? Is that the reason why they also don't refer to the massacres perpetrated by Islamists against Christians in Africa as "genocide," such as the one that occurred a few days ago in the Congo? Of all those people displaying their hatred of Israel these days, how many have called the massacres of Christians in the Congo or Nigeria, or the massacres perpetrated by the Russians in Ukraine, "genocide"?

I cannot forget that the far left warned against "Russophobia" at the beginning of this invasion, insisting on the need to distinguish Russian citizens from Putin's criminal dictatorship. As we have seen lately, it is the same far left that now applauds the expulsion of Israeli citizens from a restaurant and even French Jewish children from a plane, because they consider any Israeli or Jew to be an accomplice to the "genocide" of which they accuse Israel, while they remain complicitly silent in the face of Russia's many crimes in Ukraine.

They are worse than hypocrites: what they are telling us is that Ukrainian lives are worthless, even though they are victims of an unprovoked invasion. Let's stop and think for a moment and imagine what they would be saying about Ukraine if it had launched a terrorist attack against Russia days before that invasion, burning Russian families alive in their homes, raping Russian women and taking hundreds of Russians hostage for years, subjecting them to inhumane conditions (as Russia does with Ukrainian prisoners). That's what Hamas, which ruled the Gaza Strip, did to Israel, and the reaction of many has been to hate Israel for defending itself while at the same time looking the other way when it comes to Russia's atrocities in Ukraine, with results like those we see in these images of this latest Russian attack on the Ukrainian capital.
