PP and PSOE reject a Vox initiative to repeal abortion and euthanasia laws

Defending the culture of life should be a key element in the opposition to socialism and for political change in Spain.

The pro-abortion drift of the Popular Party

Unfortunately, the Popular Party (PP) has been implementing pro-abortion policies for many years, reflected in the refusal of the Aznar and Rajoy governments to repeal the laws established by the Socialists to promote this atrocity against the most innocent and defenseless. Finally, on February 15, 2023 the current president of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, established the party's position by calling abortion a "right", a position identical to that defended by the Socialists. That same day, the PP supported an initiative calling abortion a "fundamental right" in the European Parliament.

The PP leadership is pursuing its take-charge policy to avoid losing votes on this issue. A few months ago, the PP claimed to defend "Christian humanism" and "human life", despite defending pro-abortion policies that are openly anti-Christian and contrary to human life. The goal of saying one thing and doing the opposite is to avoid losing pro-life voters, and its practical effect is to deceive those voters, assuring them that the PP defends principles that it is actually trampling on with its votes in the institutions.

A Vox initiative to repeal abortion and euthanasia laws

This Tuesday, the PP has once again displayed its radical incoherence in the Constitutional Commission of the Congress of Deputies, during the debate and vote on a Non-Law Proposal by Vox "for the defense of the right to life from conception to natural death", which was presented on September 25. The text of that initiative can be read here (PDF). The explanatory statement of Vox's initiative stated:

"The ultimate goal of all political action must be to direct it toward the achievement of the common good, which has as a necessary prerequisite respect for human dignity and the rights inherent to the person, among which life is first and supreme.

It is necessary for the activities of public authorities to drastically change course, fully embracing the defense of life as a fundamental principle. Thus, in the face of the promotion of abortion that has developed in recent decades, new policies must be implemented to guarantee the information, support, and alternatives necessary for all mothers with a problematic or unexpected pregnancy. And, instead of regulating and dispensing with the fatal practice of euthanasia, it is necessary to approve a palliative care law that ensures both dignified healthcare and family, medical, and spiritual support for the sick. Likewise, economic, social, and institutional support measures for family members and caregivers must be established."

Finally, Vox's non-legislative motion said the following:

"The Congress of Deputies urges the Government to:
Defend the right to life from conception to natural death and end the culture of death, beginning, in line with these goals, by promoting the repeal of the Euthanasia Law and the Free Abortion Law."

The PP voted alongside the left-wing parties against this initiative.

The video of the debate and the vote on this initiative can be seen here. Vox's initiative was rejected with only 3 votes in favor (those of Vox) and 34 against (those of the other parties). As has already happened in other votes both in the Congress of Deputies and in the European Parliament, the PP voted against along with the PSOE and its allies.

The inconsistencies of the PP deputy who participated in the debate

In the debate on this initiative, MP Carmen Navarro's (PP) intervention was a display of her party's contradictions and inconsistencies. She began by referring to the PSOE's corruption scandals, then called Vox's proposal "populism" and accused Vox and the PSOE of "pinching together" and told them: "you are the same", all this minutes before the PP voted the same as the PSOE and its far-left allies against a proposal in defense of life. Finally, Navarro defended the aforementioned pro-abortion position established by Feijóo in 2023, stating: "with a Popular Party government, a woman who decides to terminate her pregnancy will be able to do so with the guarantees granted by law."

Finally, the PP deputy told those from Vox: "the enemy is Sánchez and he is right in front of us." And then she herself voted with the "enemy" against a Vox proposal that defends human life in line with the principles of Christian humanism, which according to the PP are part of its principles. Once again, the PP shows that it does not defend a political change, but rather a mere change of acronyms, voting with the left against what should be the most basic principle of the opposition to socialism: the rejection of its culture of death.

An unvotable party for those of us who defend human life

Once again, the PP has shown that it is an unvotable party for those of us who defend human life from conception to natural death, for those of us who reject those perverse laws that authorize applying to the most innocent and defenseless a death penalty that Spanish law does not contemplate even for the worst criminals. With its position yesterday, Feijóo's party has made it clear that if the PP comes to power, the same thing will happen as has happened other times: the PSOE will lose the government but its ideological laws will remain intact. The only possibility we have of preventing this from happening is if Vox obtains enough votes to force the PP to change its policy or even to govern without having to ally with that party.
