The ability of some politicians to do one thing and say the opposite is something that should stupefy any sensible person.
In June of this year, the People's Party (PP) will hold its 21st Congress. Its website has published several documents related to this event, including a "Political Report" (see PDF) on page 8 of which the following can be read:
"Our values are born of Christian humanism: the dignity of human life, freedom, responsibility, justice, equality, solidarity, and the subsidiary nature of the State. The State must be there where the individual and organized society cannot reach, and it must not aspire to replace them."
Page 27 of that "Political Report" states the following:
"We must defend life. We defend the dignity of all human life and the need to guarantee the necessary care to those who need it most until their last breath. We choose the culture of a dignified life always and, to this end, we are committed to a better-equipped and more humane palliative care system."
I think it is necessary to remember what the PP did in relation to this: the Aznar government (1996-2004) and the Rajoy government (2011-2018) did not repeal either of the two abortion laws established by the Socialists (the one from 1985, which decriminalized it, nor the one from 2010, which classified it as a "right"), despite having a total of eight years of absolute majority between both mandates.
On February 9, 2023, the current president of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, assumed the socialist thesis of abortion as a "right", stating that the socialist law created to turn the act of killing unborn children into a right "is a correct law." The party's position was no surprise: in October 2021, when he was still prime minister of Galicia, the Galician PP had supported an initiative by the BNG (far-left) calling abortion a "right".
On February 15, 2023, Feijóo boasted that the PP had not repealed the socialist abortion law of 2010 and stated that abortion is "a right that a woman has according to the law of her country." Two days later, Spanish PP MEPs joined the Socialists and the far-left to support a pro-abortion text that called abortion a "fundamental right" and called pro-life laws that protect unborn children "violence".
On September 28, 2023, the PP supported a socialist initiative to promote abortion in the Extremadura Assembly. On February 21, 2024, the PP transferred its support for the culture of death to another front: the regional government of Andalusia, in the hands of the PP, described euthanasia as a "right" and announced a mobile team to carry out euthanasias where all medical personnel refuse to do so.
Given these facts, what the PP's "Political Report" is proposing is not a desire for change: it is an attempt to deceive its voters once again, claiming that the PP defends "Christian humanism," the "culture of life," and "human life" after repeatedly trampling on them in the institutions. The sad thing is that many Catholics continue to fall for this deception or even simply ignore an issue of this importance, which should be decisive when deciding the vote not only of any person who considers themselves Christian, but of all those who defend human life without exception.
I want to remind you once again that without respect for human life, all the other pillars of our democracy are threatened. The social acceptance of abortion does not make any society freer, because killing the most innocent is not an act of freedom: it is the cowardly and ruthless act of taking the life of a human being who cannot even defend themselves. That the PP has succumbed to this atrocity, and that it also resorts to lies to cover up its position on the matter, is something that makes very clear the idea that this party has of "Christian humanism".
