Russia exceeds 2,000 tanks lost in Ukraine: these are the most damaged models

The Russian army has broken a new mark today in the military disaster that it is carrying out with its invasion of Ukraine.

Russia has lost 2,002 tanks, 544 of them captured by the Ukrainians

The independent site Oryxspioenkop.com, which has been documenting military losses on both sides with images since the start of the invasion, has reported today that Russian tank losses now exceed 2,000 units. Specifically there are 2,002. Of these, 1,239 have been destroyed, 106 have been damaged, 113 have been abandoned and 544 tanks have been captured by the Ukrainians, keeping Russia the largest supplier of tanks to Ukraine.

Let us also remember that in the invasion of Afghanistan, the USSR lost 1,183 tanks in 10 years, and was eventually forced to withdraw from that country, defeated. Russia is on track to double that figure in less than two years. It is hard to understand that there are still Russian propagandists who insist on selling this invasion as a success.

Before the war, Russia had 2,840 active tanks

In 2021, before the Russian invasion of Ukraine and according to "The Military Balance 2021", a comprehensive report published by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), the Russian Army had 2,840 active tanks:

  • 650 T-72B/BA.
  • 850 T-72B3.
  • 530 T-72B3M.
  • 310 T-80BV/U.
  • 140 T-80BVM.
  • 350 T-90/T-90A.
  • 10 T-90M.

The serious losses suffered in Ukraine and the difficulties of the Russian industry to replace the lost tanks (among other reasons due to international sanctions) forced Russia to mobilize obsolete T-tanks 62 to send them to the front. In March 2023, and given the constant increase in its tank losses, Russia pulled from its warehouses even older T-54 and T-55 from the 1950s.

Russia has already lost nearly 1,100 T-72s in its invasion of Ukraine

According to data from Oryxspioenkop.com, this is how the Russian losses are distributed among the different variants of their tanks:

  • 1.095 T-72.
  • 488 T-80.
  • 74 T-62.
  • 62 T-90.
  • 55 T-64.
  • 240 unidentified tanks.

Ukraine has lost 506 tanks and is receiving more than 700

Regarding Ukrainian losses, Oryxspioenkop.com notes that the Ukrainian Army has lost 506 tanks, of which 315 have been destroyed, 30 damaged, 21 abandoned and 139 captured by Russia or by pro-Russian separatists in Donbass. Significantly, Ukrainian tank losses are less than the number of Russian tanks captured by the Ukrainians. The patterns Ukraine has lost are as follows:

  • 309 T-64.
  • 127 T-72, including 45 tanks that had been donated by Poland, the Czech Republic and Bulgaria.
  • 40 T-80.
  • 27 unidentified tanks.

Let's remember that Ukraine has received or is in the process of receiving more than 700 tanks delivered by Western countries, a figure that more than covers Ukrainian losses (in addition to the 544 tanks captured from the Russians).
