A Galician Vox member is attacked for wearing a bracelet with the Spanish flag

In Galicia, there are still people who believe their political beliefs give them the right to harass, threaten, and attack those who hold different opinions.

This Sunday afternoon, March 23rd, the latest episode of this violent intolerance took place, frequently encouraged by separatists and the far left. Vox has reported that a member of that party was attacked when he was in Santiago de Compostela "by several individuals who insulted him, threw beer at him, and punched him for wearing a bracelet with the Spanish flag"

The statement from Vox La Coruña adds that the victim, a native of the neighboring town of Teo, "proceeded to report the incident to the National Police and provide the corresponding injury report." The attack took place when the Vox member was in an establishment in Santiago de Compostela. The attackers, "after pointing out the bracelet he was wearing, insulted him, threw beer at him, and punched him, shouting "what are you doing with this shit, fascist" and "disgusting fascist, get out of here," according to the complaint filed."

Vox has criticized the "regrettable permissiveness and complicit silence of the rest of the political forces", which "neither denounce the situation nor condemn" events like these. From that party they have indicated that "we will denounce this type of anti-democratic attitude as many times as necessary". Of course, I absolutely condemn this aggression. I hope that the perpetrators are identified and arrested and that the full weight of justice falls on them.

Vox has been suffering attacks in Galicia for years. Some of them have already been convicted by the courts:

• In August 2020, the Court of Instruction No. 5 of La Coruña issued a restraining order against a separatist who assaulted a young Vox member in that city. The perpetrator of the attack already had multiple police records for violent crimes.
• In November 2021, the Investigative Court No. 4 of Cambados sentenced the perpetrator of death threats against members of Vox in Sangenjo (Pontevedra), threats also made against an information tent for that party. The sentence stated that the perpetrator made threats such as "I'm going to kill you, I'm going to kill you sons of bitches", "I'm going to kill you sons of bitches" and "I hope they kill you, I hope they kill your daughters, let's see who's going to defend you".
• In May 2022, the Court of First Instance of Instruction of Mondoñedo (Lugo) convicted two residents of that province of coercion for an attack on a Vox information tent in that municipality.

Before yesterday's attack, the most serious incident occurred in February 2024 in Vigo, when a man shouted at members of Vox, shouting "What are you doing here, fascists?" and hit one of them in the temple, when that party had an information tent in the city for the Galician elections. The victim was Darío Capas, number 10 on the Vox ticket for Pontevedra, who had to be treated by an ambulance that was dispatched to the scene.
