A year ago I commented here that Sánchez was creating tensions in NATO to please his pro-Russian partners on the far left.
Coincidentally, last weekend the Socialist Youth of Spain (JSE), the youth branch of the PSOE, approved a text against NATO at their 27th federal congress, proposing Spain's withdrawal from the Atlantic Alliance using the same argument as communists and neo-fascists: claiming that this organization is "at the service" of the interests of the United States. Such an accusation is as false as it is cynical, since it comes from a party that is currently at the service of the interests of the Chinese communist dictatorship, of which Pedro Sánchez, Secretary General of the PSOE, is its main ally in Europe.
A leftist organization whose logo includes a red star
No one should be surprised that the PSOE's young supporters are attacking NATO. Just look at the JSE logo (below), which includes a red star, a symbol traditionally used by communist dictatorships and which is still used by the Russian Federation's military aircraft (they've only changed the color of the star's border since Soviet times).
That a leftist political organization with a red star in its logo attacks NATO is as predictable as an organization with a swastika promoting antisemitism. What shouldn't be normal in a democratic country is for the youth wing of the ruling party to display paraphernalia typical of totalitarian movements.
NATO's purpose is to “safeguard freedom”
Moreover, the JSE is not the only group that opposes NATO: this is common among all enemies of freedom, be they communists, nazis, fascists, or Islamists. Four years ago today, I already explained here why communists dislike NATO, a reason that generates the same rejection from them as from other totalitarians: the Atlantic Alliance has always aimed "to safeguard the freedom, common heritage and civilisation of their peoples, founded on the principles of democracy, individual liberty and the rule of law."
The dark past of the Socialist Youth of Spain
It is normal for a radical socialist organization to dislike NATO, because the extreme left has always sided with the enemies of freedom and democracy. Let us not forget, in fact, that the JSE was founded in 1903 within a party, the PSOE, which defended totalitarian ideas and whose leader even instigated terrorism against political rivals. A few years later, after the communist coup in Russia and the establishment of Vladimir Lenin's Soviet dictatorship, the JSE split from the PSOE in 1919 creating the Spanish Communist Party, which was the first Spanish party to join the Communist International, controlled by the dictator Lenin from Moscow.
The PSOE took several years to recover from that split and form a new youth branch. It did so in 1925. After the proclamation of the Second Republic in 1931, the Socialist Youth became involved in the assassinations of political rivals, some of them committed by a group of thugs called "La Motorizada" who acted as bodyguards for socialist leaders. One of his most well-known crimes was the assassination of the right-wing deputy José Calvo Sotelo.
In 1936, the JSE merged with the Union of Communist Youth, the youth branch of the Communist Party of Spain (PCE, the Spanish arm of Stalin's dictatorship), forming the Unified Socialist Youth (JSU). On June 5, 1936, the communist Santiago Carrillo became general secretary of the JSU. A few months later, in December 1936, Carrillo directed the murder of some 5,000 men, women, and children in the Paracuellos massacre, one of the largest massacres of the Spanish Civil War. The Socialist Youth have never apologized for those crimes, and five years ago the PSOE even voted against the European condemnation of the crimes of communism in a controversial vote in the Congress of Deputies. Therefore, I repeat: it is normal that the Socialist Youth don't like NATO, just as communists, fascists, and Islamists don't like it either.
An Alliance that has been effectively protecting the countries that comprise it
Finally, it is worth remembering that since its founding in 1949, no NATO member country has suffered an invasion by another country. The Alliance's deterrent role has been crucial in guaranteeing peace in the European countries protected by its defensive shield. In the last 18 years, Georgia and Ukraine, which were not NATO members, were invaded by Russia. One has to wonder if the JSE intends for Spain to facilitate any potential aggressor, renouncing the powerful shield that NATO provides, or if the socialist pups simply intend for Spain to look the other way if Putin attacks an allied country, as he recently did with Romania while the Kremlin had Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia in its sights. Who does that organization serve?
