They denounce the anti-democratic drift of the leftist government of Spain

The manifesto of 123 Spanish journalists against Sánchez's assault on democracy

Sánchez's coup against judicial independence is raising the voices of alarm and protest in Spanish society.

Yesterday Peru and now Spain: coup by the leftist govt against judicial independence
Is Spain heading towards a dictatorship? There are alarming data that indicate this

These protests are also being heard in the world of journalism, one of the groups that the Sánchez government is treating with hostility, due to the resistance of many communicators to the government's propaganda and lies. Yesterday, a manifesto signed by 123 journalists and collaborators from the Spanish media was published, with the title "Defending democracy".

Counting Stars adheres to this manifesto, and encourages all its readers to spread it as widely as possible on social networks.

DEFENDING DEMOCRACY

The undersigned, journalists and collaborators of different Spanish media, we are witnessing with growing concern the anti-democratic drift of a government, that of Pedro Sánchez, which voluntarily ignores the limits set in our constitutional pact, in an attempt to retain power at any cost.

We witness with concern the corrupt use of legislative activity, negotiating penal norms with those who violate them and designing legal modifications to favor specific criminals because they are conjunctural partners of the current government.

We witness with concern the current government's claim to reward, precisely, those who have committed serious crimes against that Constitution that guarantees peaceful social coexistence.

We witness with concern the authoritarian drift of a government that is carrying out a frontal assault on the Constitutional Court and the governing body of the Judiciary, with the sole purpose of being able to carry out its task of overthrowing of the constitutional framework.

That is why, before democracy is irreversibly wounded,

WE DEMAND that all public officials fulfill their duty to defend the constitutional framework of coexistence.

WE URGE the opposition parties to use all the constitutional mechanisms at their disposal to stop, or at least make it as difficult as possible, the authoritarian and anti-democratic drift of the current government.

WE ENCOURAGE civil society organizations to call as many acts and protests as necessary to convey to the government, and to all of society, the voice of citizens committed to the defense of democracy and the state of law.

WE REMEMBER the responsibility of the media, their professionals and collaborators in the defense of democracy and freedom enshrined in the Spanish Constitution.

WE ASK all citizens to actively support all actions and mobilizations that opposition parties and civil society organizations can launch, and that each defend constitutional values in all scopes, without waiting for others to do so.

Democracies do not die when their enemies try to destroy them. Democracy dies when those of us who have the obligation to defend it do not fulfill our duty to do so.

Our democratic framework for coexistence, embodied in the Spanish Constitution, is in danger. And it is the duty of all citizens to defend it, with all the legal instruments at our disposal.
