Culture of life advocates seem to always be receiving bad news, but we must never lose hope.
137 abortion centers have closed their doors in two years
A few days ago, the American pro-life organization Operation Rescue announced the closure of 137 abortion centers in the last two years. In 2022, 88 slaughterhouses for unborn children closed their doors permanently, and so far in 2023, another 49 have already closed. Each bloody business of this type that stops operating implies a large number of innocent lives that are saved, so this is excellent news.
14 US states are now abortion-free
But it is not the only good news that comes from the United States to those of us who defend human rights without making exceptions for unborn boys and girls: "Currently, 14 states are abortion free, with laws in place that protect incalculable numbers of innocent babies from being murdered in the womb," Operation Rescue says.
In those 14 states there is no longer a single abortion center left, which means many lives saved. They are the following: Alabama, Arkansas, Idaho, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas and West Virginia. To give us an idea, according to data from Operation Rescue, more than 8,000 abortions were performed in Indiana in 2021: now there are no abortion centers left in that state. There are perhaps more than 8,000 lives that will be saved in 2024.
In 1991 there were 2,176 abortion centers in the US: today there are 670
To give us an idea of the great influence that the work of the pro-life movement has had in that country, according to data from Operation Rescue, in 1991 there were 2,176 abortion centers in the United States, and in 2023 there are 670: 69% of they have closed. Operation Rescue President Troy Newman gives much of the credit to the historic ruling of the Supreme Court that annulled abortion as a constitutional right, returning to the states the possibility of legislating on the matter: "The overturn of Roe v. Wade is undoubtedly saving lives. And the enduring efforts of faithful Americans on the pro-life side are paying off and having a winning effect."
This good news is a call to hope. Far from what some want us to think, the legalization of abortion is not an irreversible act of progress: it is a form of barbarism that must be abolished just like slavery was. Prohibiting the aberrant ownership of slaves was a difficult task and involved facing very powerful movements, but it was a good and just cause. The defense of the lives of unborn children is a cause as noble as activism in favor of the abolition of slavery. We must never give up in this fight for the weakest and most defenseless, in which Reason is on our side, because as science shows, human life begins with conception and every abortion involves killing a human being, something intolerable in a society that claims to respect human rights.
