The socialist mayor of Vigo on Monday aligned himself with the extremist positions of Pedro Sánchez's government regarding the Middle East.
They demonize Israel without making a single reproach to Hamas
At the municipal plenary session, Abel Caballero and the PSOE supported a motion by the separatists of the Galician Nationalist Bloc (BNG), the Galician allies of Bildu, accusing Israel of "genocide" and declaring Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, persona "non grata."
The BNG, the author of the motion, is a separatist and far-left coalition that year after year invites the anti-Semites of the PFLP to its rallies in Santiago, presenting them as a friendly organization, ignoring the fact that the PFLP is on the European Union's lists of terrorist groups, United States and Canada. Another relevant fact about this criminal organization is that on October 7, 2023, and through its official website, the PFLP published a statement supporting Hamas's terrorist attack against Israel.
In its motion, which was rejected by the Popular Party councilors, the BNG does not say a word about the Hamas terrorists, nor about the anti-Semitic massacre they perpetrated on October 7, 2023 (the largest massacre suffered by the Jewish people since the Holocaust, with entire families burned alive in their homes), nor about the hundreds of people who were kidnapped by Hamas. Reading the BNG's text, it seems as if none of that had existed.
The BNG's controversial positions on the attacks by Russia and Hamas
The BNG's position is no surprise. In addition to its good relationship with the Palestinian terrorists of the PFLP, it should be remembered that on October 11, 2023, four days after the Hamas attack, the Bloc refused to condemn that anti-Semitic massacre in the Galician Parliament, a massacre that does have the characteristics of the crimes of genocide according to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, as I explained here a few days ago.
It was not the first time that this far-left coalition had exhibited its double standards in that chamber: in March 2022, the BNG also prevented an institutional declaration by the Galician Parliament to condemn the Russian invasion of Ukraine. It should be remembered that on the same day that invasion began, the BNG published a statement in which it did not mention either Russia or Putin, but criticized NATO and called Donetsk and Lugansk "people's republics," copying the terms of Russian propaganda, which has been describing these two Ukrainian regions in this way for years. Furthermore, in March 2022, when Vigo City Council condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the BNG abstained, as did the far-left Marea de Vigo councilors.
Vigo City Council did not approve any condemnation of the antisemitic Hamas massacre
The support of the PSOE (Spanish Socialist Workers' Party) from Vigo for this antisemitic motion is no surprise. The socialists are increasingly aligning themselves with the far left, in an attempt to attract the votes of communists and separatists in the face of the PSOE's collapse in the polls due to the scandals of Pedro Sánchez's government. In fact, Vigo City Council has not approved any motion condemning Hamas for its anti-Semitic massacre in 2023, nor for any of the terrorist attacks suffered by Israel, nor for the attacks launched by Iran against the Jewish State. When Israel is the country under attack, the Vigo left looks the other way.
An example of antisemitism according to a definition supported by Sánchez
Despite attempts to downplay its severity, this double standard is a clear example of antisemitism: this is what the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism indicates, signed by 35 democratic countries, including all the countries of the European Union with the sole exceptions of Cyprus and Malta. It was Pedro Sánchez's government that signed that definition in 2020 on behalf of Spain, and it is Sánchez's government and the PSOE who are now violating what was signed and engaging in a clearly anti-Semitic attitude with their double standards with Israel and other countries.
Vigo City Council avoided accusing Russia and Putin of 'genocide'
It is worth remembering, on the other hand, that more than a month after the large-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, and with more than enough evidence of the atrocities being committed by the invaders, the institutional declaration approved in Vigo against Russia (see text) on March 30, 2022 did not accuse the invading country or Putin of "genocide" or even "terrorism".
Apparently, the socialists reserve the most serious accusations against a democracy, Israel, which is defending itself from the most serious terrorist attack in its history, avoiding using the same terms against a dictatorship, Russia, which has invaded a neighboring country without provocation and attacking civilian targets indiscriminately and systematically, despite which Sánchez continues to buy gas from Russia while prohibiting its extraction in Spain.
