It decriminalizes abortion up to and including birth

The monstrous abortion reform in Great Britain and those responsible for this drift

Yesterday, the British left perpetrated a new and serious attack on the right to life, which is one of the pillars of democracy.

Slippery slope: three US states pass measures bordering on infanticide
Scandal in the USA: the left-wing blocks a law against infanticide in the Senate

According to Catholic Vote, this reform, promoted by the Labour Party (a socialist party that is the British partner of the Alianza Progresista), a reform decriminalizes abortion up to and even during birth in England and Wales. This measure is a true monstrosity, as is abortion at any other point during pregnancy.

We are facing a new example of a slippery slope: after legalizing abortion, the doors are now open to infanticide, as already happened in 2022 in three US states (California, Vermont and Michigan), in the hands of the Democratic Party, which is the US partner of the Progressive Alliance.

This coincidence is obviously no coincidence: the left has turned the culture of death (as Saint John Paul II aptly defined the promotion of abortion) into one of its main banners. Regrettably, throughout the rest of the political landscape, there is a regrettable tendency to give in to this promotion of death by the left. This explains the pro-abortion drift of the European People's Party (which governs the European Commission hand in hand with the Socialists) and the support for abortion by Marine Le Pen and the majority of the deputies of her party, Rassemblement National, last year when the left promoted its incorporation into the French Constitution.

As I said at the beginning, the right to life is one of the pillars of democracy. I have been denouncing for years that without a firm respect for human life, including that of human beings in their prenatal years, democracy is degraded and the doors are opened to new abuses. Unfortunately, the examples are abundant: there are attacks on freedom of expression, the presumption of innocence, judicial independence, and freedom of the press, attacks promoted by the same people who began by targeting unborn children.

Obviously, no democracy can withstand the desire of its political class to demolish it in the face of the laziness or cowardice of those who are supposed to defend it. Democracy, obviously, is not a perfect system, as no political system can be, since they all depend on human beings. There is a phrase attributed to Winston Churchill that states: "Democracy is the worst form of government – except for all the others that have been tried.". We only have to look around us to see how true this is. Those who believe that a dictatorship like Putin's could solve something like this often overlook the fact that Russia has one of the highest abortion rates in the world. This club of dictatorships where abortion breaks records also includes members such as Communist China, Cuba, and Vietnam.

Two years ago, Francisco José Contreras, a leading figure of conservative liberalism and a great defender of human life, criticized the mistaken response of some in an interview with Álvaro Peñas on Deliberatio.eu:

"Faced with this woke drift of the progressive West and all the destruction it entails, there is a danger of, as the Anglo-Saxons would say, “throwing the baby out with the bathwater.” Since the idea of human rights is becoming absurd due to infinite expansion and because a new right is invented every week (some aberrant, like abortion or “sex change”), then we throw away the very idea of human rights. That is a mistake, because classic human rights, the true ones, still make a lot of sense. They are precisely the guarantee of protection for citizens against the ever-present totalitarianism or the omnipotence of the State. We must continue to defend the right to life, religious freedom, freedom of expression, freedom of thought and association, or equality before the law. We cannot renounce the idea of individual rights just because the woke invent an absurd right every week."

I agree with Contreras. Obviously, repairing the damage the left is doing to democracy is not going to be easy. It will be an arduous path that will require great doses of tenacity, great willpower, and also considerable firmness of principles. Those who propose authoritarian shortcuts to resolve this have the same credibility as a hair growth product salesman. In fact, so far, the path they propose has resolved absolutely nothing in the area of the right to life, and nor have they had the courtesy to explain what force (presumably military) they have at their disposal to liquidate this democracy they point to as guilty and replace it with another regime that, supposedly, would solve all the problems.

On the contrary, within democracy, important battles in defense of life have been won, such as the disappearance of abortion as a right in the United States in 2022 and the abolition of eugenic abortion in Poland in 2020. More could certainly have been won, but it must be acknowledged that some conservative parties are not showing particular interest in this issue. Just look at Italy and the Czech Republic for a glimpse into this issue.

With this we must accept a sad but evident fact: the left is not solely responsible for this trend: it is also the laziness, neglect and weakness of principles of much of the right, in addition to the clumsiness of those who - beyond the right - use abortion as a mere pretext to whitewash their authoritarian prescriptions, thus doing a great favor to the promoters of the culture of death.
