The party of the murderers of José Calvo Sotelo wants to impose its narrative on us

On this day 90 years ago, on Monday, July 13, 1936, a state crime took place that pushed Spain into a bloody civil war.

The antidemocratic attitude of historical socialists whom the PSOE still claims

Four years ago, I reviewed here the details of the assassination of right-wing deputy José Calvo Sotelo at the hands of the socialists. I pointed out then that this conservative leader was kidnapped and murdered with a shot to the back of the head by police officers and gunmen from the PSOE (Spanish Socialist Workers' Party). The details of the crime have been known for many years. The shooter's name was Luis Cuenca Estevas and he was a member of the PSOE youth wing and of "La Motorizada", an armed group that escorted leaders of that party and that was also involved in other crimes.

Coincidentally, the PSOE is the same party that has already created two national laws (one in 2007, called "Historical Memory Law", and another in 2022, entitled "Democratic Memory Law") to impose its narrative on us about what happened in Spain at that time. A biased account, of course, and one that always overlooks facts such as the assassination of José Calvo Sotelo or the coup d'état led by the PSOE in October 1934 after an electoral victory for the right, in elections in which the then president of the PSOE, Francisco Largo Caballero, had threatened a "civil war" if the right won. That socialist "memory" also tends to overlook things like the Paracuellos massacre, perpetrated by the Republican side when Largo Caballero was president of the government, in November 1936, and in which some 5,000 people were murdered for political reasons, among them 50 children.

The PSOE is a party that has spent years demanding that others apologize for past events, always pointing the finger at others as guilty, even for being the children or grandchildren of a particular person. However, this party has never apologized for its involvement in the assassination of Calvo Sotelo (a crime committed, I repeat, by members of that party), nor for the aforementioned 1934 coup, nor for Paracuellos. The PSOE does not associate the concept of "apologizing" with these events and seeks to consign them to oblivion. Proof of this is what happened in 2018, when the Oviedo City Council, then governed by the PSOE and the far left, decided to remove a street dedicated to José Calvo Sotelo, labeling it as "Francoist", even though this right-wing deputy was assassinated before the establishment of Francoism.

The so-called "historical memory" preached by the PSOE is nothing more than an attempt to falsify history, imposing its narrative on past events in which the PSOE was dishonorably involved. Just as it does today with its propaganda campaigns to whitewash a socialist government besieged by political corruption, the PSOE uses this rewriting of history to conceal the crimes in which that party was implicated and make us believe that the Civil War was a struggle between democrats and anti-democrats, when in reality there were great enemies of democracy on both sides.

Two decades ago, the socialist José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero decided to use this manipulation of history to divide Spaniards into good and bad, putting the left in the first group and the right in the second. Today that party governs with the support of Miguel Ángel Blanco's murderers, demonstrating its absolute amnesia regarding the crimes perpetrated by the terrorist group ETA, and furthermore Zapatero is charged with several crimes in a serious corruption case for which he could end up in jail. It's not hard to imagine what the PSOE will do in the future to whitewash all that rottenness, seeing what the socialists have been capable of doing to cover up their bloody role in events that occurred 90 years ago.
