Steps to follow to make it more difficult for stalkers

Some tips to prevent Twitter from suspending your account for false reports

Despite Elon Musk's promises, Twitter continues to suspend accounts for political reasons, and very often due to fraudulent reporting.

This continues to happen because Twitter keeps open the channels that allow you to file false complaints against other users, even posing as third parties. Elon Musk has not solved this problem that started years ago. In view of this situation, I thought it was a good idea to propose some tips to prevent your Twitter accounts from being suspended due to false reports. These tips are especially aimed at users who deal with political issues, who are usually the most affected by these situations. I have been on Twitter for 13 years, and so far they have not managed to suspend my account by applying these tips.

The tips are divided into two parts: one aimed at creating a safer environment and that is less prone to these false reports, and another aimed at avoiding risky practices that can put our accounts in jeopardy. Both parties are linked.

1. Create a safe environment

  1. Don't feed trolls: block them. Trolls are users who make a habit of taunting others, often by insulting them. Their purpose is to attract attention and get others to engage in arguments with them. Often these heated discussions are used by these trolls to make false allegations. If another user insults you, block him. If he approaches you with an impertinent attitude, trying to provoke you, do not engage with him. Check his profile and see if this is his usual behavior. If so, block him. It doesn't matter if the troll is a follower of yours. Some become followers just so you feel more qualms about blocking them and are more likely to reply.
  2. Check your lists and accounts that follow you from time to time. Often when a stalker wants to make a false report against you, they follow you so they can have easier access to your messages in order to report them . It is healthy to check if you have followers who are openly hostile and who can cause such problems. It is not always easy to identify them. In the case of Twitter lists, these kinds of stalkers have a habit of putting their targets on lists with insulting names. In both cases the solution is the same: blocking.
  3. Do not indicate as an email account in Twitter one that has the same username as your Twitter account. It is best to create an email account with a username that is different from the username of your Twitter account, and possibly the username of that email is not easy to deduce. This will help prevent anyone from impersonating you to falsely report others.
  4. Activate two-factor authentication on your account. This is to make your Twitter account more secure and avoid cases like those in the previous point. Twitter indicates how to do it here.
  5. If they have started a campaign against you, take shelter. On Twitter, situations of harassment and mass lynchings are very frequent. These lynchings allow stalkers who submit false reports to notice your account and report it. If you find yourself in a situation like this, protect your tweets (Twitter explains how to do it here), albeit temporarily until the situation calms down. This will prevent stalkers from having access to your messages to report them.

2. Avoid risky practices

  1. Think a little before writing and, above all, before responding. Impulsive messages often end in account suspensions. And this happens very frequently when those messages are responses to others (for example, to the trolls that we have talked about above). Think carefully about what you are going to write and do it with a critical sense . Consider how other people might interpret your message and, most importantly, how Twitter might interpret it.
  2. Beware of irony and colloquial expressions. Many users tend to communicate with others on Twitter in the usual tone of chatting with friends, and in doing so they forget, for example, that irony on Twitter does not is well captured, as are certain colloquial expressions. We must bear in mind that Twitter moderation is not done by people: it is carried out by algorithms , and these tend to be very "flat" when it comes to interpreting messages. For example, expressions said in a jovial tone to a friend such as "if you do that, I'll kill you" are interpreted by Twitter as threats.
  3. Don't insult. In today's times, any opinion can be offensive to those who get annoyed by everything. I don't mean it. There are words that are objectively insulting and, out of education, we should avoid. And on Twitter not only for education, but also so they don't turn against you. Try to avoid them especially when replying to other people, as they increase the risk that Twitter's algorithms will interpret that you are harassing someone else.
  4. Avoid posting any kind of information that could be interpreted as private data. Twitter's algorithm is not very smart, and often interprets data that is not private, such as phone numbers or email accounts, as private information emails that are in the public domain, but are often used by stalkers to make fraudulent reports. As much as possible, try to avoid mentioning phone numbers and email addresses, both in the text of your tweet and in the images you attach to it.
  5. If your account has been suspended and you are going to create a new one, change your IP. You can do it by resetting the router from which you connect to the network, since nowadays most routers assign IP variables. If Twitter detects that you are using an IP that you already used with your other account, it can also suspend the new one.
  6. If your account was suspended by Twitter, making a new account avoids the reason for the suspension. This can be tricky when Twitter's censorship has been due to an unfair and absurd reason, as often happens when the suspension is given for reasons of opinion. Do not forget that in a censored environment, you have to be smart. Find another way to present the same opinion, in such a way that it is more difficult for you to censor It's a challenge, I know, but that's the way things are.
