A review of the long life of the former British Prime Minister during WWII

Churchill, a good documentary about one of the most interesting characters of the 20th century

Since I was a child I have been very fond of history, but only as an adult have I noticed a detail that usually occurs when looking at the past.

Ayer Churchill, hoy Zelenski: la razón de ser de ciertas críticas en un tiempo de guerra
The figures of the American and British aid that prevented the defeat of the USSR in the WWI

That detail consists of our tendency to look for heroes and villains, sometimes for the most diverse reasons. Sometimes those reasons are obvious. Hitler, for example, was a mass criminal, who deserves to occupy the darkest pages of history. On other pages there are heroes who carried out admirable deeds. But in many pages we can also find complex characters, sometimes mistreated in their time, but who today deserve a prominent place in history among those people who contributed decisively to avoiding a disaster.

One of those characters was Winston Churchill, the famous Prime Minister of the United Kingdom during World War II, whose role was very important in one of the darkest hours of his country, a time in which his word was decisive in motivating his compatriots to resist Nazi Germany, with speeches as inspiring as his speech on June 4, 1940 in the House of Commons, some words that move me every time I read them:

"We shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end. We shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air. We shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing-grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills. We shall never surrender!"

Yesterday, Academia Play published a very good documentary about Churchill, in which he traces his very long life (he died at the age of 90), full of adventures but also disappointments. I encourage you to see it (the video is in Spanish, you can activate the automatic English subtitles in the bottom bar of the player):
